I wrote this song after meditating on the Lord’s Prayer (found in Matthew 6:9-13). Jesus’ disciples ask Him to teach them how to pray and He could model asking for anything, anything at all. But His top three requests to His beloved Father are “Hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” What do those three desires say about His heart?
Jesus, Son of Heaven,
Homesick in our world,
What are You longing for?
(2x)
I’m longing for the honor of My Father’s Name
I’m longing for the coming of My Father’s reign
I’m longing for the part of Heaven I miss most:
The way His will was done there
The way His will is done
Jesus, Son of Heaven,
Living in our world,
What are You asking for?
(2x)
I’m asking for the honor of My Father’s Name
I’m asking for the coming of My Father’s reign
I’m asking for the part of Heaven I miss most:
The way His will was done there
The way His will is done
Jesus, Son of Heaven,
Ruler of our world,
What should we ask for?
(2x)
Ask for the honor of your Father’s Name
Ask for the coming of your Father’s reign
Ask for the taste of heaven you’ll get now
When His will is done…
Oh, I ask for the honor of my Father’s Name
I ask for the coming of My Father’s reign
I ask for the taste of Heaven we’ll get now
When Your will is done
May Your will be done.
