My other name for this song is “The song from the Wilderness of Ziph.” The story behind it is that I had just been hit by some disappointing news that meant my dreams and plans were all going to take much longer than I expected. Desperate for some comfort from God, I flipped a Bible open by the light in the bathroom at night and found Psalm 54. What struck me was not the content of the psalm–it seemed like a very typical David-song: “My enemies are chasing me, but God will help me, and I will praise Him”–but rather, the inscription at the top. It said David wrote this psalm “when the Ziphites went and told Saul, ‘is not David hiding among us?'” I had read the back story in 1 Samuel 23:15-29. David was hiding from his would-be killer King Saul in the Wilderness of Ziph, the place his dear friend Jonathan came to comfort him, when the Ziphites betrayed him and he had to flee to yet another hiding place. Like me, David had received painful news that meant his promises and call from God were still not fulfilled yet… and his response had been to write a song about it. I said, “All right then, Lord, I will write you a song in this moment too. What is the most wonderful thing that I could possibly write about?” The most wonderful thing I could think of was that Jesus lived inside of me in that moment. So I sat down and wrote this “Song from the Wilderness of Ziph” for Him.
The Man who lives inside me is not anxious;
The Man who lives in me has perfect peace.
That Man inside of me
Sees everything I see
And none of it disturbs Him in the least!
Chorus:
And He says, “You may have peace in Me
Because I am at peace in you.
When I look at your life,
I am not afraid;
I see all that I am going to do.”
The Man who lives in me has seen the Glory;
He’s gazed upon the glory of the Lord,
And He tells me it is worth it,
Tells me it’s enough,
Tells me He has walked this road before.
Chorus
The Man who lives inside me has all power;
The Man who lives inside me has no fear.
That Man inside of me
Has overcome the world
And now He’s come to overcome it here.
Chorus
The Man who lives inside of me is Holy,
The Man who lives inside me is the Lamb
That Man inside of me
Is the One whom angels praise
The Man who lives inside me says “I am.”
Chorus
The Man who lives inside of me is Jesus
Who lived and died and rose to live in me!
That Man inside of me
Is who I want to be
And I know that He was won the victory.
Chorus
